Ukulele/Poly
Ukulele/Poly I is an introductory course to the basics of ukulele playing.
In the first semester, students learn basic music theory and are taught to navigate the instrument through ear training and the learning of easy melodies and two-voice harmonized parts. The early part of the class also stresses chord shapes and strumming techniques to facilitate the learning of a voice-accompanying style.
Later in the year, classical fingerpicking, contemporary techniques and soloing styles will be covered.
Ukulele/Poly II-IV is a course designed for students with moderate to advanced experience on the ukulele. The class is a continuation of Ukulele/Poly I and stresses chord progressions, music analysis, melodic and harmonic composition, and songwriting. Late in the year, recording and advanced performance techniques will be covered.
Students in both classes will perform in front of their classmates and at public concerts and will work on transcribing, transposing, and improvising off of recorded music. Guest artists will be brought in to hold master classes.
